How to Create a Morning Writing Habit

Getting up in the morning sucks …

…that is, until you make a habit out of it and it turns into the most productive, amazing, and rejuvenating time of your day.

What-whaaaat?

I know, you’re wondering what kind of crazy early-morning kool-aid I’ve been drinking.

It’s true, I get up every morning between 5 and 6 am. I journal. I write. I work on my kick-ass-author mindset. And yes … it tends to be the best part of my day. That’s because I’m focusing on what I love. Writing. And not just dreaming about writing, but actually getting it done!

Imagine if the first thing you did everyday was focus on your novel. No distractions. No emails asking for your attention. No internet judging you with likes or dislikes. What if you didn’t wait until your lunch break to write? Or stick it out till the end of work when you’ve used up most of your energy? How amazing would it be to start each day sitting in your writing chair and rocking-it with your work-in-progress?

That would be pretty awesome, huh?

Of course, the problem isn’t wanting to do it. The problem is getting our sweet-lil’-tushes out of the bed in the first place. The covers are sooooooooooo cozy. Dreamland is warm and fuzzy. You can’t get out of bed. You can’t!

It’s amazing how we brainwash ourselves into believing there are things we can’t do. Simple things … like getting up in the morning.

Of course, you CAN get out of bed.

It’s just hard.

Which is why I’m all about the path of least resistance.

I’m not going to tell you to get up, get dressed, pound a Redbull, and go for a run. That sounds like pure torture, and no one would get out of bed for that! But what I will tell you, is how easy it can be to get up when you do something simple … like put your alarm on the opposite side of the room, or reward yourself with a special treat in the kitchen.

Creating a morning writing habit takes less effort than you think. In fact, it’s all about the lease effort you can put forth, day by day – till suddenly, you’re up every morning writing and getting amazing work done.

I made two videos explaining exactly what I do every morning, and how easy it is for you to create a morning writing habit as well.

Check ’em out here:

Of course, if you’re a night owl … morning writing probably won’t work for you. Don’t try and force it. Know yourself and your process.

However, if you’re unsure if you’re a morning person … try it. See if you feel invigorated. And if you want a little more convincing, check out this post where I make a case for why morning writing is so productive for some authors: The Case for Morning Writing

Happy writing everyone!
